Purim Cookies: Hamantashen Recipe

Jump to Recipe

Purim (which means “lots”) is quickly approaching. So here is their traditional treat to celebrate this minor Jewish holiday with—Hamantashen Cookies.

Here’s a little bit about this festive holiday of mask wearing and cookie baking with this particular treat being named after an enemy of the early Jews—wicked Haman—who sought to annihilate them.

However, a Jewish Queen by the name of Esther, raised up by God, would ultimately stand in the way of this antisemitic evil scheme plotted by Haman, and the LORD through her would save the Jewish people from destruction. Having successfully defeated their enemy, the celebration has continued for centuries until this present day.

The complete story of how things unfolded can be found in the Bible, in the Book of Esther. The holiday will be recognized this year from sunset of March 23 to sunset March 24. To find out and read a more detailed explanation of Purim, visit Jewish Voice.

FYI Jewish tradition appear to suggest that the triangular shape of these name-saked cookies is because it was the shape of the hat that wicked Haman’s wore. 🙂

RECIPE

NOTE; This recipe was adapted from the original with my choosing to use 2 types of flour (i.e. in order to reduce processed white flour in recipe rather than to cut it out totally but kept for stability and texture of these cookies) as well as the use of allulose in place of white refined sugar. However, feel free to use those if you are not low carb and sugar free.
