Cruller Donut Fries

One of my beloved mother’s favorite places to satisfy her sweet tooth was the famous Krispy Crème Donut Shop, and one of her absolute favorite donuts, beside that of the traditional glazed donut, was the Cruller—the second runner up here.

I remember my mother oftentimes sending my twin sister and I on the usual errand  for donuts (to only this particular donut shop that is), especially when she felt in the mood for something sweet, that she herself didn’t have to bake up. So in memory of my dear mother and her love for the Cruller, I decided give making this “twisted cake donut” a try—and after tasting the results, I only wish she had been here to enjoy them with us. 🙁

Anyway, I am happy to share what I thought once would be a complicated recipe, prove to be an  absolute cinch, with you. However, I would encourage you to use a pastry or piping bag, as you’ll create more appealing Cruller fries then mine done by hand. After all, what foodie doesn’t love gawking at stunning eye candy or luscious food porn! LOL 😉

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp Vegan or Organic Butter or your choice
  • 1 cup cup water
  • 1 tbsp Sugar organic
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup All Purpose Flour unbleached
  • 3 Large Eggs free range
  • 1/4 cup Sugar organic
  • 1 tbsp Cinnamon
  • Canola or Vegetable Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. On medium high heat, melt the butter and sugar, and then add a cup of water. Bring to a quick boil. Immediately remove from heat.

  2. Combine the flour and salt and add to the butter-sugar mixture. With a wooden spoon, stir until the flour is incorporated and dough forms.

  3. Blend in by hand, three eggs, adding one at a time. The mixture might appear crumbly, however, continue to stir until it comes together to form a ball.

  4. Using a pastry bag with a star tip, pipe out dough to form small to medium sized fries.  If making immediately, drop into hot oil at 375 to 400 degrees and cook until golden brown, otherwise freeze for a couple hours for easy handling later.

  5. Immediately roll and coat fries in the cinnamon sugar mixture, and enjoy!

Recipe Notes

If you do not have a pastry bag, as I did not at this particular time, than use a large freezer bag, and cut off the tip of one corner. Another option is using a piece of saran wrap, roll pieces of the dough into small balls, then squeeze and press it to form into the shape of a crimped fry.

As always, I use organic ingredients in my recipes whenever possible.
